I took a HUGE step today!
For those of you who don't know, I LOVE to bake. I am not very good at cooking, but I LOVE TO BAKE!
While we were living in Corpus Christi, I was able to take a cake decorating class. I also received every cake decorating tool known to man for xmas last year!
Well, last weekend, we finally got a copy of the town's newspaper. I nonchalantly perused the classifieds, not expecting much. Right under food services was an ad for a cupcakery (a bakery that specializes in cupcakes) that needed a decorator/baker.
After much deliberation, I decided to drive over there today and see if I had a shot at it. It was QUITE a drive! So long, in fact, that I almost talked myself into turning around three times. In fact, when I finally got there, I had no intention of telling them I was there for the want ad. I was going to get my cupcakes and get out. But somehow, in between my "hello" and "oh, what flavor are those?" I involuntarily spit out that I was there about the ad in the paper. The woman behind the desk suddenly switched gears and said "Oh, well, here's an application!". I filled it out, and then immediately got escorted to the back office by the owner herself. She was a very sweet, petite woman with a bubbly disposition.
As soon as we sat down, another woman walked in about my age and said "Hey mom, try this". She held out an icing spatula with a kiss-sized dot on it. The woman reached out and grabbed some.
"Good! Maybe add a few more drops of lemon! OH! Also, put a ring of lemon zest around the top of the cupcake! That way, they really get a lemon taste when they take a bite!"
She turned to me and apologized "I'm sorry! We've had an exciting morning! We just came up with a pina colada cupcake and now we're working on a pistachio cupcake!"
All my doubts and insecurities about this position immediately disappeared.
As the interview went on, I learned I was the most experienced applicant she had had thus far. Which is the good news. Bad news is, the ad she has runs until next week and there is most definitely a chance that someone better qualified will pop up.
Obviously, I've had a difficult time NOT getting my hopes up. Everyone there was so friendly and they all seemed to feel the same way I do about baking.
I tried to explain to the owner how passionate I was about it and how I would do it for free, just to learn as much as I possibly could. She assured me that if I was hired, her very skilled decorator could help improve my own decorating skills. (my heart literally skipped a beat!)
So, as I wait for a phone call from the cupcakery, I feel proud of myself for getting out of the car and doing what I went there to do!
Here's to stepping outside of my comfort zone! :)
Good luck!
