HIMYF Excerpt

The following is just what I started on the How I Met Your Father story. It's kinda long, so bare with me. I'm not too crazy about the format I wrote it in, so if you have any tips or suggestions, please share! It was just the best way for me to organize my memories at the time! Thanks!

How I Met Your Father

August 2005

It was during this semester (first Spanish class) that I’m sure I saw your dad. We were in the same class and I remember seeing him in his uniform (cue swoon) walking in with his friend Mark. We didn’t talk much….if at all!

January 2006

Spanish semester dos. Your mom was a bad student and skipped her first day of Spanish class to sleep in after a long night of driving. My friends and I went on a skiing road trip the week before. Your dad was a good student and didn’t miss and sat next to an empty seat the first day.

The second day, however, I made it in early and sat down in a random seat. A seat that just happened to be next to your dad’s. I’m sure that we exchanged pleasantries and recognized that we had the same class the semester before.

March 2006

I must’ve tried to ask your dad out a million times and chickened out each time. Each time class ended, I always stayed after to talk to him just enough to make me late for my next class with Amanda. We got in trouble in that class a lot for talking. Mostly it was her scolding me for not asking him out. He remained “the cute guy in my Spanish class” pretty much the entire semester….until the final.

April 2006

My friend Elizabeth and I decided to get together to study for our final at the library on campus. I had your dad’s number from random Facebook messaging and I texted him to invite him to study. He didn’t really respond, so I didn’t expect him to come. But he did! Of course, instead of studying, we ended up talking for a good two hours.

May 2006

As the semester came to an end, I started messaging your dad on Facebook much more (cowardly, I know). Eventually, I got his attention and he called to ask me out on a date. I was actually in a gas station with Amanda when he called and left a message on my phone. When we got back in the car, we had to play the voicemail twice because the first time, we just screamed after hearing   “hey, this is Josh”.  We went out on a Tuesday, May 16, 2006. We saw Mission Impossible 3 and ate at Chili’s.

Your dad didn’t kiss me after our first date….much to my dismay. I concluded he wasn’t interested in me and figured I wouldn’t hear from him after that.  But the next weekend, I was in Oklahoma City with my friends and as we headed out to Bricktown, he called and it just so happened he and your Uncle Kit were also in Bricktown that night. We met up and that’s when all my friends got to meet him and that’s when I met your Uncle Kit as well. He was very quiet!

The next weekend, your sweet dad offered to help my friend Amanda move into my house. After the work was over, Amanda went to bed and your dad and I stayed up watching scary videos online.

As he was about to walk out the door for the night, he kissed me goodnight. That was the moment I realized I was going to marry him. I even woke up Amanda and told her about it. We stayed up all night eating junk food and talking about it. One of the best nights of my life!

The rest of the story…..

Things progressed very quickly with your dad and I. We fell in love very quickly and just knew that we were going to get married someday. Our summer was full of stress and separation. Your dad had to spend 4 weeks at field training for Air Force ROTC and I was taking classes and working two jobs. I knew that once school started, things would only get busier. I was right. We had a very busy fall semester together and it was a challenge balancing our lives out with this new relationship we had. Luckily, we survived and made it to Christmas Break.

At this point, we already knew we planned on marrying one another and even had a tentative date picked out. I had no idea that by December your dad already had a ring picked out and was planning to ask your grandpa’s permission to marry me very soon.
