So I know I didn't include any kind of dietary changes in my blog about NY resolutions, but this one is a recent event that has become a necessity.
Unfortunately, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) has always been a part of my life. It's always been pretty tame though. When I started eating better and running regularly, it became almost nonexistent.
Cue pregnancy....
Ever since Elise was born, it's gotten way worse. Hormones are aggravating it and my lack of exercise isn't helping at all. So I've decided to be proactive and make myself feel better by changing my diet.
This past week, I discovered another reason to change my diet. Elise was diagnosed with silent reflux, its basically just like infant reflux minus all the spitting up.
So with those things in mind, I began doing research and consulting professionals about what to take out of my regular diet. Unfortunately a big no no for both is dairy products. I'm still having a hard time coming to terms with this one because I've always loved dairy. I used to have a big glass of milk every night before bed. No more of that....
So dairy is pretty all encompassing, including cheeses, milk, yogurt, ice cream, sour cream, etc. Then there's beans...which also sucks because my husband and I got very accustomed to having black beans in most of our meals. No caffeine, carbonated beverages, artificial sugar (or too much natural sugar), fatty or fried foods, or raw broccoli.
Elise and I are about to start walking regularly to get my body prepared for starting a real exercise routine (hopefully in two weeks!).
I'm hoping that once my exercise routine kicks in and the extra hormones vacate my body that everything will be a bit easier. Then maybe I won't have to so strictly avoid that wonderful glass of milk I love so much.
This has become quite a challenge for me. Luckily my husband is also looking to eat healthier for his own benefit so he's jumped on board with enthusiasm! Here's to a happier healthier McVay Family!
I have a lot of friends that have had to do the dairy free thing. Coconut milk is a nice yummy alternative to cows milk. I love it even more than cows milk! I also have been having banana ice cream during an ice cream craving. I put frozen bananas, a scoop of peanut butter and cocoa in the food processor. It totally has the texture of real ice cream and is fantastic! Look into goat cheeses too. I know my friend gets feta made from goat cheese. Make sure you get enough healthy fats because when we take out dairy in our diets it's easy to lack in healthy fats. Make chicken salad with mashed avacado instead of mayo, etc. Just wanted to pass along some of the ideas my friends have used.
ReplyDeleteYou already eat super healthy, this shouldn't be too hard to handle! Plus you'll keep dropping weight with cheese and other dairy products cut out! Look on the bright side, only 11 more months to go!
ReplyDeleteWhew that is tough girl! Check out some raw recipes, they have things that you can replace cheeses with etc. What about almond milk? Your friend lindsey made some great suggestions too! They may not taste exactly the same or as great but it helps with the cravings. You are an awesome Mommy!
