First Benchmark: Florida!

This past week, Elise and I marked off our first benchmark! It's been a hectic and stressful week, but we managed to make the most out of our travels!

Before flying out to Florida, Elise and I drove to El Reno to visit her other set of grandparents. The plan was to stay a few days with them then fly out from OKC to Florida. The day before our flight left, Elise and I were both feeling pretty under the weather. We just couldn't seem to shake our nasty Oklahoma borne allergies. Neither of us were really sleeping, and I had started to see spots of hives. Most likely an allergic reaction to the antibiotics I had been on the week before for a sinus and ear infection. Like I said, we just can't seem to get well! So I had decided we weren't going. I called my friend, told her what was going on, and tried everything under the sun to feel better, and even how to still use my plane ticket for some other trip. I didn't want to waste the money, but unless I wanted to spend an extra $450, my $240 ticket was useless.

We had a much better Sunday night and I decided to go ahead and tough it out. So we did. Flying alone with an infant was quite the adventure. I think I'll save the actual details on what I would recommend for another blog!

So we arrive in Florida Monday evening around 7pm local time. We flew into Orlando but our destination was St. Augustine. So we had to drive another 1.5 hrs after getting off the plane. By this time, Elise is pretty cranky. She typically goes to bed around 7-730 every night. My friend had her 8 mo old son with her and those two screamed bloody murder until we just had to get a break in Daytona. We had a quick dinner at Cracker Barrel and the babies had a chance to stretch their legs and get their bellies filled. Then we made our way home.

My friend had to work the following day, and it was pouring down rain. Elise ended up sleeping 6 straight hours that night and then took 3 naps that day! So we didn't do much besides go to lunch. Then that night, we met another HS friend of ours for dinner. Her and her AF husband live in Jacksonville.

The next morning, I woke up completely covered in hives. Like, it was really really bad. My eye was almost swollen shut and my legs were covered. I didn't see any other choice but to see a doctor. this was my friends only day off while I was there, so instead of going to the beach on our first sunny day, she dropped us off at urgent care. Luckily they knew I was coming with a baby and they got me in and out really quickly. Unfortunately the medicine they wanted to give me is something I can't take while nursing. Even if I was ok with giving Elise formula for the three days I needed to take the meds, I knew that she couldn't just give up nursing cold turkey for the first time in her life. She doesn't take a bottle easily, and not at all from me. So the meds were out of the question. I've been taking Benadryl almost every day this week. So I feel like a zombie a lot. Always drowsy.

After visiting urgent care, we went back to my friends house to let the babes nap. That afternoon, we took the babies downtown for a tour of the old part of St. Augustine. It really is a beautiful town. I loved all the little shops and we caught a shop that had a cupcake happy hour! My kind of place! My friend is a youth pastor, so on Wednesday nights, she works. Elise went to bed around 6 and I got to stay up, watch a little tv and Facetime with my husband for over an hour. Bad day turned good really quick!

The next day, I was determined to go to the beach! So we did. Our new friends took us to the splash pad at St. Augustine beach. Then to see the ocean. Elise loved it!

After my friend got home from work, we loaded all our stuff up and headed to Orlando. We carpooled with four moms and four babies total. Elise cried the entire trip....it was so stressful! But we finally made it, had dinner and did a little shopping before checking into our hotel and trying to sleep a little before arriving at the airport at 4am. The babies did very well on the flights home and drive to Tulsa.

This trip was both stressful and stress relieving. My friend that I visited is one I've known and loved since 2nd grade. Getting a chance to talk and catch up on everything was priceless. We've been through a lot together. From elementary school and cheerleading drama, to first heartbreaks and parents splitting up. The last trip we took together was our senior year to NYC. This one was ten times more special because we got to spend it with our children. It warms my heart so much to see Elise and her son, Jonah play together. I can only hope that one day (maybe sooner than we think) Elise will find a friend like I have in her. Someone who, no matter how much time has passed or how different they become through growing up, will always be a good friend and love you. That's my hope for my sweet girl. There's NOTHING quite like a good girlfriend. I'm hoping this isn't the last time our kids get together.
